“Coming To America” Sequel Confirmed
After 30 long years, it’s been confirmed that there is a ‘Coming to America’ sequel in the works. The original classic grossed nearly $300 million at the worldwide box office.
The rumor was actually started in March, Murphy himself, tweeted an image of actress Vanessa Bell Calloway that bore a caption reading,
“Coming to America sequel?”
This week the imminence of a part-two to the 80’s classic received a confirmation with the naming of the film’s director and screenwriter.
Black-ish creator and Girls Trip co-writer Kenya Barris has been tapped to rewrite the script and Jonathan Levine of The Wackness, 50/50, and The Night Before will direct the Kevin Misher production. They replace original writers Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield, original director John Landis and producers of the 1988 original, George Folsey, Jr. and Robert D. Wachs. However, there’s no word yet if Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Shari Headley or John Amos will be returning for the sequel.
No date has been established for the beginning of the film’s production or its expected release.
