One of H&M‘s biggest collaborative client has dropped working with H&M because of an offensive graphic hoodie.
H&M loses The Weeknd after a racially offensive top, an African American boy wearing a green hooded sweatshirt that says “Coolest Monkey In The Jungle.”
Many took to social media when the top, which was marketed in the U.K. hit the waves, because it’s been a racially charged term for many years to use the word “Monkey” in reference to an African American individual. Stars like Diddy and LeBron James put out blasts on Twitter, but The Weeknd will definitely effect H&M’s bottom line by dropping out.
“woke up this morning shocked and embarrassed by this photo. i’m deeply offended and will not be working with @hm anymore…,” says The Weeknd. Currently, he has not removed his photos or videos from the collaboration of his Instagram:
According to USA Today, H&M released an apology but judging by the offense, it’s a little too late for that.
“We sincerely apologize for offending people with this image of a printed hooded top… The image has been removed from all online channels and the product will not be for sale in the United States.We believe in diversity and inclusion in all that we do and will be reviewing all our internal policies accordingly to avoid any future issues.”
Needless to say, H&M may not get the support it’s hoped for in the days to come.
