Chicago’s Mayor-Elect Says Jussie Smollett’s Case ‘Doesn’t Rank As A Matter Of Any Importance To Me’
Chicago Mayor-Elect Lori Lightfoot said Jussie Smollett’s case “doesn’t rank as a matter of any importance to me.”
The 56-year-old will formally be sworn into office on May 20, and some are wondering if the Empire star’s case is on her list of things to tackle.
“I’m not going to comment on any pending litigation. Obviously, this was a decision that was made by the current mayor, Rahm Emanuel,” Lightfoot said in a statement to ABC 7 Chicago. “We’ve got a lot of things on our plate, a lot of pressing issues that are truly affecting people’s lives. This doesn’t rank as a matter of any importance to me.”
Lightfoot’s commentary comes on the heels of the county inspector general being asked to review Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx‘s handling of the criminal case.
Foxx’s investigation came after the City of Chicago sued Smollett for failing to pay $130,000 the Midwestern city reportedly spent while investigating Smollet’s alleged false hate crime.
The City of Chicago said that it is seeking “the full measure of damages allowed under the false statements ordinance,” in a statement.
