FOX59 is reporting that Ohio woman, Marie Trainer, had to be rushed to the hospital and placed in a medically-induced coma. She was hospitalized for over eighty days as her symptoms, including high fever, nausea and body aches, continued to worsen.  In just a few hours things took a turn for the worse when she developed sepsis and her condition continued to deteriorate. In just a few days later, Trainer’s limbs turned necrotic and gangrenous—ultimately resulting in the decision to amputate them while she was comatose.

Blood tests and cultures at both Aultman Hospital and the Cleveland Clinic confirmed the surprising diagnosis of capnocytophaga, a bacteria commonly found in the saliva of dogs and a smaller percentage of cats. Doctors suspect that one of her two dogs licked at a scrape on her arm causing the infection.
