The New York Times reported that Cyntoia Brown was released from jail this morning.  Brown’s story made national headlines, raised awareness of the plight of trafficked young people and inspired a push for criminal justice reform in Tennessee. She will remain on parole supervision after serving 15 years in jail for killing her sex trafficker.  Unfortunately, she was only 16-years-old when she was taken into the sex traffic trade and sentenced to 51 years in jail before becoming eligible for parole.

Stars such as Rihanna and Kim Kardashian campaigned for her clemency which was granted by ex-Tennessee governor Bill Haslam.  She is now 31-years-old with her GED and she’s also received an Associates Degree while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.  And she’s expected to complete her bachelor’s degree by the end of the year.
