MTV announced that Missy Elliott will be this year's recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. Fans of the iconic rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer think that the honor is long overdue.

MTV made the announcement on Monday, August 12 regarding the trendsetter, who will become the first woman rapper to receive the award.

Elliott will be gracing the stage during the award ceremony on August 26 at the Prudential Center in New Jersey, which would mark the "Work It" rapper's first VMA performance in 16 years.

The Grammy Award-winning artist and visionary will now join the likes of Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, and Britney Spears.

Elliott took to Twitter to share her excitement about the honor and also thanking her fans who she lovingly calls "Supafriends."

"I am humbly grateful to be receiving the Michal Jackson Video Vanguard Award," Elliott tweeted. "I thank my FANS "Supafriends" who fought diligently to see this day come."
