Canadian Teenager Bianca Andreescu Beats Serena Williams At Grand Slam
Bianca Andreescu, a 19-year-old Canadian, beat Serena Williams to win the US Open on Saturday at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. It was Andreescu’s first Grand Slam title, and the first for a Canadian, according to ESPN.
Williams, 37, has 23 major wins, which is still one short of Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24.
“Bianca played an unbelievable match. … It was incredible tennis out there,” Williams said during her on-court interview. “I just wish I could have played better.”
The 15th-seeded Andreescu was born in 2000, a year after Williams won her first US Open title. She’s the first tennis player – male or female – to win the US Open in a debut appearance at the event.
