Netflix’s Michelle Obama Documentary ‘Becoming’ Trailer Released
On Tuesday (May 4), Netflix released the trailer for its Michelle Obama documentary, Becoming. The Nadia Hallgren-directed film about the former First Lady hits the streaming behemoth on May 6, 2020.
The trailer commences with Obama riding in the backseat of a car with a voiceover of her saying, “I am from the south side of Chicago.” “That tells you as much about me as you need to know,” Obama continues in the trailer.
She then says that she was from a ” typical working-class community” that had “some good music, some good BBQ,” and “some good times.”
Michelle Obama then explained that “So little of who I am happened in those eight years,” referring to her husband, Barack Obama’s eight-year stint as the president of the United States. “So much more of who I was happened before.”
The clip then shows Michelle talking to someone about a high school counselor who apparently, didn’t support Michelle the way that she needed. “She decided I was reaching too high,” Michelle says.
Michelle was then asked by a black teenage girl how did she persevere “as a black woman.” Alicia Keys’ single “Girl On Fire” then begins playing in the background.
“We can’t afford to wait for the world to be equal to start feeling seen,” Michelle says before she’s seen reading to a classroom of young children.
“I just have to say that Michelle and Barack Obama aren’t special. There are millions of Michelle and Barack Obamas all over the world,” Michelle is then heard saying.
“This is totally me unplugged for the first time,” Michelle concludes in the trailer.
