Timothy Sanders became the third Moore County winner of a $100,000 North Carolina Education Lottery prize this month.

Moore County has been a hot spot for winners in the North Carolina education lottery, and a Southern Pines man is extremely happy about that.

Timothy Sanders of Southern Pines grabbed $100,000 on a $1 Cash 5 ticket Sunday night. That’s the third winner this month alone in Moore County. Samphant Vanamathis won $100,000 on a Cash 5 drawing. And Steven Richter of Jackson Springs won $100,000 on a scratch-off ticket.

“My heart was racing,” Sanders said. “I had to put the ticket down and go to the kitchen to get some water before I went back and checked it again.”

Sanders got his Quick Pick ticket at the Southern Pines Mobile Mart on Central Drive.

“I was really, really excited,” Sanders, a 47-year-old plumber, said. “I really was shocked.”

After taxes, Sanders took home $71,010 on Monday, and he said he has a pretty good idea what he’ll be doing with his money.

“I’ve been wanting a truck forever,” Sanders. “Probably a Chevrolet.”

Cash 5 is one of four lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets through a retail location or Online Play, either through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Cash 5 tickets are $1 and drawings are held every night.

Tuesday’s jackpot is $110,000. The odds of winning a Cash 5 jackpot are 1 in 962,598.

Ticket sales from draw games such as Cash 5 make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $900 million a year for education. For details on how $4.8 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Moore County in 2021, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.

Of note, these rankings include just metro areas, so smaller cities like Fayetteville aren’t included on this list. Our numbers sort of fall in with Raleigh.
