Masters Tournament 2022: Complete Coverage

Scottie Scheffler of the United States celebrates on the 18th green after winning during the final round of the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club on April 10, 2022 in Augusta, Georgia.

The world’s top-ranked golfer proved exactly why he just vaulted into that position, as Scottie Scheffler won the 86th Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club.

Scheffler topped Rory McIlroy by three strokes to take home the record $2.7 million prize to go along with the iconic Green Jacket. He made it interesting with a scary double-bogey on the last, when his nerves finally got the better of him.

McIlroy did try to make things interesting, shooting a final-round record-tying 8-under, 64. But Scheffler never blinked much.

Cameron Smith was Scheffler’s biggest competition all day, until disaster struck on the par-3 12th hole. Smith triple-bogeyed the hole and wobbled his way to the finish. Shane Lowry closed with a quiet 69 to finish in a tie for third.

Scheffler had rounds of 69-67-71-71 to take home the Green Jacket. His calm, cool demeanor never got rattled all weekend.

Scheffler had just one blemish on his card in the final round of the Masters, a bogey on the 10th. But he was able to drop birdies on 3, 7, 14 and 15 to offset that. His nerves on the 18th green were understandable, and cost him nothing but a prettier scorecard.

Collin Morikawa finished just behind that group, after he and McIlroy closed out their 18th holes with nearly identical chip in birdies from the green-side bunker. It was the most exciting moment of the afternoon, with the crowds erupting on both shots.

Tiger Woods was the story of the first three rounds, as he came back from his horrific car accident in February of 2021, and put together a solid first couple rounds to make the cut. He was never in contention on the weekend, however, as the exhaustion clearly set in from having not played any competitive golf since the accident. He shot 78-78 on the weekend rounds, and finished 13-over, in 47th position. A remarkable finish given what he’s been through.

But the story of the day Sunday was Scheffler, who won his first ever tournament just two months ago. He’s been the hottest golfer on the planet since, with now four wins in 57 days, the No. 1 ranking in the world, and six top-5 finishes. He missed the cut only once so far this season.

The Masters had a beautiful Sunday at Augusta National, with patrons filling the grounds for the first time since Tiger’s dramatic 2019 victory. The weather was perfect on Sunday, after winds made a mess of the second and third rounds. (View our patrons photo gallery here!)

The top 12 players and ties get automatic spots in next year’s Masters. Charl Schwartzel, Dustin Johnson and Danny Willett didn’t need that as past champions, and of course Scheffler doesn’t need it. But that ended up being helpful for McIlroy, Lowry, Smith, Morikawa, Will Zalatoris, Corey Conners, Justin Thomas, Sungjae Im and Cameron Champ.
