Many fans said that they were hesitant about tuning in to House of the Dragon after how the final season of Game of Thrones turned out. But, as it turns out, a lot of people tuned in. And HBO has just announced that the prequel has been renewed for a second season, following the success of episode one’s ratings.
The announcement came relatively quickly following the series premiere this past Sunday (August 21), which delivered ten million viewers overnight. Per The Hollywood Reporter, this broke HBO’s record for a series opener, with the episode’s viewership climbing to 20 million views as of this Friday.
“We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season one,” says Francesca Orsi, executive VP of HBO programming. “Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV. A huge thank you [to co-creator and executive producer George R.R. Martin and co-creator and showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik] for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two.”
HBO has at least seven Game of Thrones spinoff projects in the works — four scripted, three animated. It has yet to be announced by HBO how many episodes the second season of House of the Dragon will have. Season one spent ten months filming, and spent a long time working on postproduction visual effects work, which began in January and is still ongoing. It will be difficult for the production team to film and VFX another season by the end of 2023, so a 2024 return could be more likely.
New episodes of House of the Dragon air Sundays at 9 pm on HBO. There are 10 episodes this season.
