Getty ImagesHere's a hot take: the job market in North Carolina is tough right now. I know, shocker right? But are you making it even harder for yourself with an overdone, needlessly wordy resume? There's nothing wrong with selling yourself to a potential job opportunity, but if you use too many cliché buzzwords you run the risk of losing out on the gig. But don't worry, just a few small edits could radically change your resume for the better! The famous job search site indeed.com revealed a list of buzzwords you should never use on your resume if you want the job of your dreams.
Indeed uses a few different categories to classify different buzzwords to avoid. They stress the importance of straying away from what they deem "business lingo," as they tend to be overused and make your resume look weak. It's barely ok for corporate CEOs to use these buzzwords, so what chance do you think you have if you include them in a job application?
A few examples of business lingo you should avoid include:
- Bottom line
- Move the needle
- Synergy
The next category of buzzwords Indeed suggests eliminating from your resume is self-promotional phrases. While it is important to flex some of your more positive qualities, you also want to give your resume its own identity to set it apart from the pack. But employing these commonly used self-promotional buzzwords can make your resume seem more cookie cutter and bland.
Avoid these self-promotional phrases at all costs on your resume:
- Go-getter
- Strategic thinker
- Think outside the box
- Proactive
The final category is simply "givens." The buzzwords in this category are simply fluff and add little to nothing in the way of any actual substance. Indeed goes into great detail in warning you about these particular buzzwords. "... avoid taking up space with words like 'people person.' Nearly every job will require you to work with other people, so unless you have a specific example that shows you’re exceptionally skilled in this area, it’s not worth including."
These buzzwords will accomplish nothing except wasting crucial space on your resume. Avoid them like the plague:
- People person
- Hard worker
- Team player
Job searching is already such a frustrating, tedious process. There's no need to make it more so with a bland, uninspired resume. If you avoid these buzzwords, you stand a better chance of making your resume stand out to a potential employer. Check out the full list here.
These Emojis Can Make People Like You
Emojis are here to stay. In fact, pretty much every age group uses emojis now. Whether you're a Gen Z or a grandparent of a Gen Z, you've probably used emojis on a regular basis. So, which emojis can make people like you? Okay, these aren't guarantied to win homecoming court or anything. But, these emojis tend to be the ones that personally make me happy, and they're among the most popular emojis that people use, too.
Adobe's most recent emoji report, the "Future of Creativity: 2022 U.S. Emoji Trend Report," released last fall, surveyed 5,000 emoji users from the United States. They discovered that the emojis enhances "our everyday lives, especially when it comes to self-expression, relationship building, and mental health. The versatility of emoji allows for endless possibilities to connect with each other, as their meanings evolve and inclusivity expands."
Paul D. Hunt, typeface designer and font developer at Adobe, and Kamile Demir, computer scientist at Adobe and Adobe representative on the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee, discussed their emoji thoughts on the new report. "Emoji give people the resources they need to be able to express themselves and show their emotions, whether it be on social media or messaging apps. They allow people to convey more than just words on a screen and connect more deeply to others," Demir said.
One other reason why emojis are so popular is because the online connection can be very cold. Hence, emojis give a human aspect to those online and digital communications. "When we spend so much time behind screens, those desires increase without the in-person markers of tone, facial expressions, and body language," Adobe states. Emojis help bring emotion and life to an otherwise very stale form of conversation. Ready to get your emoji on? Read on for some facts about emojis and what emojis are most popular- and could make people like you more.
