Shrek is famous for his inhospitable swamp home, but now you could stay there! Well, in a version of it at least.
Photo by Chris Jackson/Getty ImagesTime to crank up the Smash Mouth and hit the bog bath; the Shrek swamp has broken through the silver screen and is now on Airbnb! The famous ogre homeland has been recreated in the Scottish Highlands and will soon be open for booking. The swamp will be available for a two night stay for up to three guests on October 27-29.
Whoever made this recreation did an amazing job too. The attention to detail is magnificent, from the warning signs in the front yard(?) to the eyeball martini. It really does look like the real deal, down to the last slime-covered toadstool.
The Shrek franchise has been a cultural phenomenon for decades now, with a rabidly devoted fanbase lending to its tremendous staying power. The first Shrek movie still holds a special place in my heart. I was even able to overcome my crippling childhood shyness by reciting the whole "brimstone" scene word-for-word in front of my extended family.
But as my generation has become older and more jaded, the main lesson we've taken from Shrek now seems to be, "huh, maybe living in a swamp far away from everybody else would actually be pretty sweet." Well now here's your chance!
According to the official listing, Shrek's swamp offers a plethora of cool amenities that pay homage to the beloved fairy tale films. These include dinner by earwax candlelight, yummy parfaits, access to Shrek's private outhouse, and of course freshly made waffles in the morning. Thanks, Donkey!
Booking for this magical getaway destination opens up on October 13. Since this isn't part of a contest, Airbnb is making it clear that whoever books the stay is responsible for their own travel expenses to and from Scotland. But for a true Shrek fan that's just a small price to pay for such a once-in-a-lifetime Airbnb experience!
4 Drive-In Movie Theaters You Have to Visit in North Carolina
Summer nights are the perfect time to cruise down and catch a movie from your local North Carolina drive-in movie theater. Drive-in theaters invoke a feeling of nostalgia for summer days gone by, with popcorn and fireflies aplenty.
Once upon a time, they were plentiful and dotted the landscape in most rural American towns, however many have since closed their lots.
"There are currently only about 330 drive-in theaters that remain in operation in the United States compared to a peak of about 4,000 in the late 1950’s," the online resource DriveInMovie.com said. "There are many reasons for the decline of the number of drive-in theaters. But one thing is certain – we must support remaining drive-ins to prevent their closure to maintain this truly unique experience that is an American as homemade apple pie."
But don't despair! There are still some fully functioning drive-in theaters up and running North Carolina. Some of them are airing special Halloween features in the next month or so. And a couple even have the special Taylor Swift Eras Tour movie coming up in October.
That makes for a lot of fun opportunities as the weather cools down, and your nostalgia heats up. Enjoy these North Carolina drive-in movie theaters.
