One of the bigger trends that I found out about early last year that artists with a substantial catalog participated in was the NPR Tiny Desk Concert. The first one I remember seeing was T-Pain's and it was amazing. There have been some really good ones over time like Juvenile's and especially Usher's. The latest one came from Jeezy and just in case you may have missed it I have it here for you.
Long Live Bo$$ – Def Jam’s First Signed Female MC Dead at 54
The hip-hop world said goodbye to an incredible talent and trailblazer yesterday with the loss of Bo$$, the first lady rapper to sign with the iconic Def Jam Records. 1/2 of The Legendary Undaground Kingz, BunB posted a tribute on his IG:
"Rest in peace to my big sis Lichelle Laws AKA Boss. One of the best female MCs and a dear friend. Give Rick Royal a hug for me. Long Live The Org!"
Detroit born Lichelle Marie Laws more popularly known as Boss or Bo$$ smashed barriers for female artists in a male-dominated genre, leaving her mark with powerful lyrics and a strong presence. With production from the like of Jam Master Jay and Erick Sermon she dropped her only solo album in 1993. She eventually settled in Dallas working as a radio personality.
Although she's been battling renal disease since the early 2000's, her passing at 54 shocked the music scene, making us appreciate her monumental impact. Let's honor the life and legacy of Bo$$ with a playlist for a rap legend whose spirit will forever resonate in hip-hop history.
