A Brief History of the Carolina Civic Center
The Carolina Civic Center in Lumberton, North Carolina started in 1928 under the name The Carolina Theatre. The theatre first began as a vaudeville and silent film house and was was owned by the Lumberton Theatre Company. For over 40 years, The Carolina Theatre served the area as its main cultural arts center. Sadly, in 1975, the theater closed. Some in Lumberton wanted to demolish The Carolina Theatre and turn the property into a parking lot. In the mid 1980's, a group of locals decided to attempt to save the historic structure. In 1985, the venue came to life under its current name, the Carolina Civic Center. Today, The Carolina Civic Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
