State officials have finalized plans to upgrade the Pinehurst Traffic Circle. The changes add traffic signals and a connector road while keeping trees in the area.

Officials will present the plans at The Fair Barn in Pinehurst on Oct. 28. The open house runs from 3 to 7 p.m. The updates aim to cut down on traffic jams and crashes at the five-way crossing.

Two smart signals will control traffic flow on the east and west sides. Inside the circle, workers will build a new road between N.C. 211 and N.C. 2. The project adds changes to Midland Road's entry point. A fresh roundabout will sit where N.C. 2 meets Airport Road.

The project is expected to begin in 2031, focusing on timing completion between the 2029 and 2035 U.S. Open golf championships scheduled at Pinehurst Golf & Country Club.

The state picked this design after studying 20 different layouts. When shown early sketches last summer, 600 residents sent in feedback. Most wanted to protect the circle's trees and natural setting. The city wanted to balance the need for improvements and be responsive to the community's preferences.

The public can weigh in until Nov. 12. Send thoughts by email, leave a message at 984-205-6615 with code 7045, or visit the project website.
