Deputies, troopers, and officers from four police departments launched "Operation Safe Passage" to protect kids returning from winter break. Multiple agencies worked together on this effort.
Drivers got tickets for passing stopped school buses and for speeding in school zones. They also got tickets for other violations that threatened students. One person behind the wheel of a Camaro blazed through an active school zone at 89 mph.
"This isn't Fast & Furious — our kids' safety comes first," Sheriff Johnathan Morgan wrote with a photo of a squad car radar displaying 89 mph, per WNCT. Deputies said the Camaro driver was "flying through" the zone.
Six agencies participated. The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office led the operation with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Fayetteville Police Department, Stedman Police Department, Spring Lake Police Department, and Hope Mills Police Department.
Morgan thanked dispatchers with Cumberland County Emergency Services, too. Officers fanned out to multiple school zones across the county during the crackdown.
With winter break coming to an end and students walking to class again, traffic enforcement in school zones is a high priority. The enforcement efforts are about keeping kids safe and preventing accidents in school zones.
