Improving Community Outcomes for Maternal and Child Health (ICO4MCH)
Welcome to ICO4MCH
Improving Community Outcomes for Maternal and Child Health (ICO4MCH) is a multi-faceted, population-level maternal and child health initiative which works to address three aims: (1) improve birth outcomes, (2) reduce infant mortality, (3) improve the health status of children ages 0-5.
The Sandhills Collaborative is a multi-county team working collectively across a four-county region (Hoke, Richmond, Montgomery, and Scotland) to achieve the aims of the ICO4MCH initiative.
Our mission is to improve the health and wellness for women, children, and families as a whole in our local communities and state through use of evidence-based strategies proven to address infant mortality, birth outcomes, and child health in a culturally sensitive manner.
Our Focus Areas
- Improving Birth Outcomes
Improve birth outcomes by enhancing efforts in promoting and increasing the utilization of Doula support services by women of reproductive age to achieve the healthiest, most satisfying birth experience as possible.
- Reduce Infant Mortality
Reduce infant mortality through the implementation of the Ten Steps for Successful Breastfeeding, with a focus on steps 3 and 10, and the establishment of public lactation spaces.
- Step 3: Inform all pregnant women about the benefits of, and management of breastfeeding.
- Step 10: Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mothers to them on discharge from the hospital or birth center.
- Improve the Health State of Children Ages 0-5
Improve child health status ages 0-5 through implementation of the Positive Parenting Program (Triple P)
- To promote the independence and health of families through the enhancement of parents’ knowledge, skills, confidence, and self-sufficiency.
- To promote the development of non-violent, protective, and nurturing environments for children.
- To promote the development, growth, health, and social competence of young children; and
- To reduce the incidence of child maltreatment and behavioral/emotional problems in childhood and adolescence.
- To reduce out-of-home placements.
- To reduce emergency department visits related to abuse and neglect.
- To reduce out of childcare/school suspensions related to behavioral issues.
