As we celebrate 50 years of Hip Hop my mind keeps drifting to artists who deserve their flowers. As she celebrated her 52 birthday recently, I began thinking of Melissa Arnette Elliott (to the government), but Missy Misdemeanor Elliott to Hip Hop fans. Missy has been one of the most impactful artists and producers Hip Hop has seen in my generation. The versatility, creativity, and artistry this woman exudes is top-tier! I don’t just mean “female” artists either, since we love to make that division in the genre.
Cash Money Record artists were not the only ones taking over for the 99 and 2000, Missy was the top female hip-hop album seller from the late 1990s into the 2000s. Missy Elliott is actually the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She is also the first female rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Obviously, someone has been paying attention to this living legend’s contributions to music throughout her career.
Missy has accumulated over 200 awards including 6 Grammys and more than 300 nominations throughout her impressive career. Missy hasn’t stopped going either! How many artists are able to still create relevant music, sell-out shows, and influence the culture over two decades after beginning their careers? Keep scrolling to check out some of her top 10 Billboard singles and pics from her 52nd birthday during Essence Fest this year.
