Setting up a Zen space is a must to improve your life.

I have to tell you, I've become obsessed with reclaiming a zen space in my home. Like a lot of working moms, I tend to get focused on job obligations, home chores and of course, the most important job of all, my kids. As parents, sometimes our own peace and calm gets lost in the daily routines that make sure the machine of life keeps chugging along. I was talking to a good friend about this a while back and she said she has nowhere in her home to go and just find a calm, quiet space to unwind. In fact, as she comes from a farming family, she sneaks out to the family barn just to have some space to think.

Then I learned about hygge. According to the Scandina Standard: "Hygge is about cosiness and surrounding yourself with the things that make life good, like friendship, laughter and security, as well as more concrete things like warmth, light, seasonal food and drink. Hygge embodies a feeling of comfort, contentment, and well-being through simple and everyday experiences. It encompasses a range of feelings and experiences related to coziness, togetherness, and an appreciation for life’s small pleasures."

Bingo. I found a concept that seemed to embody what I was missing in my routine. So, I set out to create a "mom space" for myself. I went online to learn what elements I needed and after lots of research, scouring Facebook Marketplace, and repurposing items I already had on hand to carve out slice of peace in my house.

If you want to add the elements of hygge to your zen den, check out these bliss-inducing ideas! The options are pretty limitless on how to stock your relaxation area, the most important part is that you feel cozy and peaceful.

Candles

Candles are a must! The soft light and scent automatically remind me to unclench my jaw and take a deep breath. The colors and flavors are strictly a personal preference, but I adore the wooden wicked candles that produce a crackling, fireplace sound.

Blankets

A comfy blanket makes all the difference in the world! The right blanket for that space entices you to cozy on down with good book and let your stresses float away (for a little while, at least).

I have two recommandations for blankets. After much research (the best kind of research, cozy blanky research!) I recommend a knitted, weighted blanket and a soft, cotton muslin blanket.  The knitted weighted provides a warm feeling of security but since it's knitted, it's not likely to overheat you.  The soft muslin blanket is for those days you just a soft snuggle without a lot of heat.

Lighting

Lighting is essential in the relaxation process.  I'm not a fan of "The Big Light" so these dimmable lamps provide the perfect vibe to chillout to.

Mug Warmer

I do not think it's to much of an overstatement to say that a warm mug of whatever is your pleasure (hot chocolate, coffee, or tea) is a must have in your zen den.  Whatever warm drink is your favorite, keeping it warm just got a ton easier with a mug warmer.  Santa brought me one for Christmas, and it's been the best addition to my little space.

Book Cart

Part of what spurred me into action with the reclaiming of my space was having a comfortable place to read.  I love being able to have a cozy space to read and unwind. I also love the book cart for storage and displaying my favorite novels.

Seating

Whether it's a bean bag, recliner or wingback, you need a comfy chair! I loved hunting on Facebook Marketplace for deals and I did finally find the perfect chairs for my cozy spot.
