Da Brat Defends Jermaine Dupri’s Comments About Women Rappers
Da Brat recently defended her longtime collaborator and good friend Jermaine Dupri’s comments about women rappers.
On Tuesday, the “Funkdafied” rapper spoke to the paparazzi while at LAX airport. The Chicago native referred to Dupri as “genius” and she talked about how the producer’s commentary regarding women rappers was a “good thing.”
“Everything Jermaine Dupri does, he does strategically,” she said. “You should be thankful that the conversation is even started now, because now the focus in on us [female rappers]. New [rappers], seasoned [rappers], legends…everybody’s commenting.”
While giving her opinion on the viral interview, Da Brat stated that Dupri’s statement was in response to the interviewer asking how he felt about Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, and Nicki Minaj.
The Atlanta producer referred to women rappers as “strippers.” However, the only artist out of those three who is a former stripper is Cardi B. Prior to rapping, Nicki Minaj worked at Red Lobster and Megan Thee Stallion was in college, and she still is, while forging a new rap career.
“I love Jermaine Dupri, he’s very smart at what he does and there’s always a method to his madness,” Da Brat said prior to stating that the producer’s comments were “absolutely taken out of context.”
Dupri’s viral comments received various reactions. Many dismissed the “Money Ain’t A Thang” rapper’s criticism and others agreed with him. Some chose not to directly address his statements at all and state their own opinions on women of the rap game.
Following the frenzy, Jermaine Dupri announced that he would be hosting a So So Def Female Cypher.
After all the calls,DMs, angry tweets and other messages saying “I am a major gatekeeper in the hip hop world, why don’t I invest in a female who is out here hustling and making a name for herself?” I decided to create the #SoSoDefFemalecypher, details coming soon pic.twitter.com/Nyxl5KpPXZ
