Survival was the name of the game at The 2024 Masters on Friday, as wind stole the show, and made for a frustrating day for some of the best golfers on earth.
First, the good news, for fans of Tiger Woods, you’re going to get two more days of him at The Masters. Woods made the biggest headline of the day, breaking the record for consecutive cuts made at The Masters, with 24 in a row. (More: Tiger Woods Gallery From Round 2 of the 2024 Masters)
That traces back to his one missed cut in 1996 – just his second year playing the tournament – and a history of dominating the course. Woods finished with an even-par 72, after his first-round 73. He’s 1-over, and was well within the cutline.
Part of the reason for that is a cutline that kept drifting back as the afternoon grew long. The wind was so strong – including frequent gusts of 30-35 mph – throughout the day that balls were rolling off greens, and shots left up in the air drifted far off line.
Couple that with the fact that 30 or so golfers had to finish their first rounds early Friday, before they came right back out to play 18 more holes. For Woods, that meant 23 holes in one day.
The 2024 Masters Leaderboard
That all created some chaos at the top of the leaderboard, where first-round leader Bryson DeChambeau did his best to hold on. He finished the day with a 1-over, 73. That dropped him back to 6-under overall.
Scottie Scheffler was one shot back going into the round, and he went back and forth through the wind to finish near the top of the leaderboard as well.
Max Homa was 5-under going into the second round, and managed to go 1-under in Round 2, putting him at 6-under overall also.
