During the 2019 Oscar Awards, Marvel's Black Panther won for Best Costume Design and Production Design.
The award-winning film's costume designer, Ruth E. Carter who became the first African-American to win an Oscar for costume design, accepted the award, and showed gratitude to women who have been leaders on the silver screen.
"Thank you for honoring African royalty and the empowered way women can look and lead on screen," Carter said.
"My career is built with passion to tell stories that allow us to know ourselves better...," Carter continued. "Mom thank you for teaching me about people and their stories. You are the original superhero."
After winning an award for Best Costume Design, Black Panther also won for Best Production Design.
Black Panther's production designer, Hannah Beachler graced the stage and shouted out The Big Easy. "New Orleans, you heard me," she said before thanking Black Panther's director Ryan Coogler.
She then continued her acceptance speech by recognizing her family who she says supported her.
"I did my best, and my best is good enough. Thank you," Beachler concluded.
