Lizzo Reveals Depression Battle, Singer Almost Quit Music
As a breakout artist, Lizzo is having a pretty good year. However, two years ago the rapper and singer was ready to walk away from music.
The artist, who was born in Detroit and raised in Houston, revealed during an interview with People that she battled depression and was ready to quit music after she thought that she wouldn’t end up where she wanted to be career-wise.
In 2017, the rapper dropped her biggest hit “Truth Hurts,” and it didn’t receive the response that she wanted.
“The day I released ‘Truth Hurts’ was probably one of the darkest days I’ve had ever in my career,” Lizzo said. “I remember thinking, ‘If I quit music now, nobody would notice. This is my best song ever, and nobody cares.’ I was like, ‘F**k it, I’m done.’ And a lot of people rallied; my producer, my publicist and my family, they were like, ‘Just keep going because this is the darkest before the dawn.’”
“Truth Hurts” reemerged on the scene, after being used in the Netflix film Someone Great. The catchy track currently sits at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, which is the singer’s first time entering the chart’s top 10.
“What a moment in a movie can do for an artist is crazy,” she continues. “I had everything else: the hard work, the good music, touring — but then there’s that extra-special magic that nobody really knows what it is that can really change your life.”
Lizzo is now appearing in the highly-anticipated film Hustlers alongside Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, Keke Palmer, and Constance Wu, and her stage presence has garnered a standing ovation from her peers, including Rihanna. Lizzo’s major-label debut, Cuz I Love You, also received rave reviews.
