J. Cole Reacts To His First No. 1 ‘Off A Drake Alley-Oop’
J. Cole earned his first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with his assist on Drake’s “First Person Shooter.” This was the first time in nearly a decade the two have collaborated. While it was a great moment for fans to see the rappers on a song together once again, and Cole is grateful for his first chart-topper, the North Carolina rapper expressed that he would have preferred his first to be a solo record.
“I’d almost feel better not having my first number one being off a Drake alley-oop, you know what I mean?” Cole told Lil Yachty on his A Safe Place Podcast. “I love Drake and I love that I’m a part of that moment with him with Michael Jackson. But it’s like, bruh, I’m grateful I’m a part of it, but if that other song [“IDGAF”] would’ve went number one, n—-, I’m still grateful I’m a part of it.” “IDGAF” featuring Yeat took the No. 2 spot on chart.
J. Cole and Drake Collaborations
“First Person Shooter” marks the third collaboration between Cole and Drizzy. In 2010, Drake hopped on Cole’s “In the Morning” from his 2011 album Cole World: The Sideline Story. In 2013, Cole assisted Drake on “Jodeci Freestyle” which ended up on the Toronto rapper’s 2019 Care Package project.
Cole also helped Drake during the It’s All A Blur Tour with 21 Savage. During the earlier tour dates, 21 could not make the tour stops in Canada. The KOD creator jumped in, and they had a moment on stage where he seemingly confirmed there might be another collab between the two on the way.
“Maybe I could get on the album?” Drake asked per fan video of the concert.
J. Cole responded, “N—-!”
“Can I get on the album? I’ma ask in front of Montreal. ‘J. Cole, can we get on your album?'” Drake asked as the crowd began uproaring trying to convince Cole.
The Dreamville founder gave into the peer pressure shooting back: “Say less, goddammit!”
