Lil Mama Reveals She Was ‘Hurt’ After Crashing Jay-Z, Alicia Keys Performance
Lil Mama got emotional as she recalled her infamous 2009 VMA's moment when she crashed the stage while Jay-Z and Alicia Keys were performing “Empire State of Mind.” In a recent interview with The Jay Hill Podcast, Lil Mama said that Jay was “so angry” about the incident and that she was “just trying my best to do everything I could do.”
Lil Mama said she was “hurt” and that she had to deal with the media personalities talking about the moment on their shows and that Tyrese called her to see how she was doing.
“You got everybody telling you, ‘You’re doing bad.’ People pointing at you, like, ‘What did you do?” she told the host, holding back tears.
She admitted that she was “depressed” and that after a while, she had to forgive herself and “move forward.”
Jay-Z and Alicia Keys Comment About The 2009 Lil Mama Incident
Jay spoke about the incident in an interview shortly after the performance:
“It’s just like, someone’s up there performing, we worked, we went to rehearsals, we did run-throughs. We worked really hard at the performance to put on a show for people and to interrupt that moment for us, I don’t think that was the right thing to do,” he said.
Keys admitted that she wasn’t aware Lil Mama was on the stage and that she was laser focused on performing well.
“I went backstage and Jay was like, ‘so, you ain’t see that?’ And I was like ‘what?’ He was like, ‘so you ain’t see what just happened?’ And I was like, ‘yeah, we killed it. That’s what just happened,” she told REVOLT in 2021.
Jay also admitted in 2021 that there is no bad blood between him and Lil Mama.
“Of course, we love her,” he told Rob Markman in 2021. “Yes, she’s forgiven. It’s all love and she was coming from a place of love.”
