Lil Baby Explains Why He Doesn’t Speak On Controversial Topics
As one of the biggest hitmakers in the game today, Lil Baby says that political topics are off-limits.
That’s despite the fact that the Atlanta rap star had a massive hit with his 2020 protest single “The Bigger Picture,” addressing police brutality, racism, and inequality. Just like many of Lil Baby’s songs, the record was recently certified double-platinum.
During an interview with MSNBC, Lil Baby reflected on the single and how that the song was not supposed to be about the 2020 protest of George Floyd’s death. The rapper’s intent was simply what the title states, “The Bigger Picture” and facing problems in the community head-on.
“I wasn’t gonna make just a George Floyd song,” Lil Baby said. “I mentioned what kind of happened in the song a little bit, but it was the whole [experience]. It wasn’t just that incident because it was bigger than that incident. Not saying that incident was not bigger than other incidents, but it was just my chance to speak on the whole thing.”
“I don’t really catch what’s going on or what people are saying,” he continued. “I don’t really wanna just speak on situations, especially when I don’t know the whole backstory [because] something I say might get misinterpreted. So, I’m quiet as far as me posting.”
As for the black squares on Instagram flooding the timelines in protest last year, Lil Baby explained doesn’t want to just post and be “fake.”
“I know people, personally, who got killed by the police,” he said. “That would be fake of me to post about [Floyd] when I ain’t even post about somebody I know who is going through [a similar situation].”
