Pop Smoke’s Murder Has Connection to Recent Murder of Another Rapper
Pop Smoke’s murder has been connected to a new murder of another rapper whose body was found in a barrel. According to TMZ, law enforcement is investigating the murder of a Los Angeles rapper named Javonnta Murphy.
Javonnta’s naked body, which was contained in a barrel, washed ashore on July 31 in Malibu. Javonnta is the brother of Jaquan Murphy, one of the five people arrested in connection to Pop Smoke’s murder in 2020.
Jaquan was first charged with attempted murder for Pop Smoke’s death but later was cleared of the charges. However, he is currently awaiting trial for an unrelated murder.
Law enforcement sources tell the tabloid that the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is currently looking into the murder of Javonnta as retaliation for the killing of Pop Smoke.
Pop Smoke, whose real name is Bashar Barakah Jackson, was shot and killed in February 2020 during a robbery in the Hollywood Hills. Pop was not alone during the time of his murder, but he was the only one that was shot.

Amelia Rose was the woman who was with Pop Smoke during the time of his death.
“Pop said he was going upstairs,” Amelia Rose told Van Lathan on WeTV’s HipHop Homicides. “I’m sitting on the bed, and I’m starting to take off my clothes, and he said, ‘OK, I’ll come back.’ He was going to the restroom, and so this was his last words.”
“This moment, it was like a couple seconds, and I hear the noise.” She described hearing a sliding glass door open. “The guy was in the mask, and his gun was like looking at me, you know? His eyes made me so scared. They run to the restroom, Pop screamed, ‘What?'”
Later in the interview, she tearfully recalled Pop Smoke being dragged from the bedroom by a masked man. After moments of commotion, she heard the gunshot that ultimately led to his death. Rose explained that she still has trouble sleeping at night and is shocked she wasn’t killed as well.
In May, an 18-year-old man — who was 15 at the time of the murder — was charged in the fatal 2020 shooting of Pop Smoke. He admitted to killing the rapper in juvenile court, per the Los Angeles Times.

Nicki Minaj dropped her second solo song of the year, “Last Time I Saw You.” Unlike most of her songs, Nicki raps over an R&B beat and becomes more vulnerable with her lyrics.
“Handwritten letter, you pеnned it/Them nights we wish never ended/Those rules that we wish we bended/Heartbreak that we never mended/Those messages we unsended,” she raps in the first verse.
She performed “Last Time I Saw You” at the 2023 VMAs where she was the host for the second year in a row.

Drake and SZA linked up for “Slime You Out.” This is the first time the two have been on a song together. It serves as the lead single to Drake’s For All The Dogs. “Slime You Out” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
"You" - Lola Brooke ft. Bryson Tiller
Lola Brooke enlisted Bryson Tiller for “You.” Lola Brooke, who hails from Brooklyn, sampled another Brooklyn emcee Foxy Brown. Lola used “Get Me Home” by Brown and R&B group Blackstreet. The track appeared on Brown’s 1996 debut album Ill Na Na. This also marks the first time Lola has worked with Bryson.
"Snooze Remix" - SZA ft. Justin Bieber
Weeks after Justin Bieber appeared in SZA’s official music video for “Snooze,” they dropped an acoustic version. It is the first time the two have worked on a song together. “Snooze” is off of SZA’s sophomore album SOS, which dropped in December 2022.

Doja Cat’s singles leading up to Scarlet already had us in a chokehold. At midnight on Friday (Sept. 29) Lil Yachty and J. Colę surprised fans with their first-ever collaboration. Both of the emcees express in their verses that they want respect for their contributions to hip-hop. The music video features both Yachty and Cole sitting in an empty auditorium.

Latto recruited fellow ATL native BabyDrill for her latest “Issa Party.” The song interlopes Waka Flocka Flame’s 2010 hit “Grove St. Party” (Waka Flocka is also from the ATL). Flocka responded to a tweet that suggested that he should sue Latto for the use of his song. “Flattery at [its] highest,” the rapper wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter. “Never understood why rob these youngsters for showing us respect plus Lotto from Clayton County.”
"Pretty Girl" - Ice Spice and Rema
Ice Spice and Rema joined forces for their first collaboration “Pretty Girl.” Rema also surprised fans by performing with Ice Spice during Saturday Night Live. It was both artists’ first time performing on the sketch comedy show.

Tyla dropped “Water” in July but she finally released the music video to accompany the viral song in October. The dance that goes along to “Water” caught the attention of TikTok, and from there, the song gained more popularity. The South African artist is gearing up for her debut album for sometime in November.
