R. Kelly: Chicago Prosecutor Drops Sex Abuse Charges
A judge has dropped R. Kelly’s sex-abuse charges at the prosecutor’s recommendation. According to the Associated Press, the hearing only lasted a couple of minutes. The decision came a day after Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx said she was “comfortable dropping the case because Kelly will spend decades in prison for separate convictions in federal court.”
Kelly, who was not present during the dismissed indictments, was awaiting trial for state charges on sexually abusing four people in the Chicago area. Three of those people were minors at the time of the alleged abuse.
On Monday (Jan. 30), Foxx realized that some Kelly accusers would be disappointed with her decision. Lanita Carter said justice was “denied for me.”
“I have spent nearly 20 years hoping that my abuser would be brought to justice for what he did to me,” Carter said Monday.
However, Kelly is not done with legal charges just yet. Another sexual-misconduct case is pending in Hennepin County, Minnesota, where he faces solicitation charges. It has not been said by prosecutors whether it will be taken to trial.
Kelly is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence in the New York case and awaits sentencing on Feb. 23 in Chicago federal court.
