Black-Owned ‘Ghetto Gastro’ Pop Tarts & Pancake Mix Available At Target
While browsing the aisles of Target, I came across Ghetto Gastro toasted pastries. The name alone piqued my curiosity, so I decided to look into the company further.
According to their website, Ghetto Gastro is a Black-owned Brooklyn-based brand that was created by entrepreneurs Jon Gray, Pierre Serrao, and Lester Walker. Right now, they’re selling their line of “ghetto” toaster pastries and pancake and waffle mix in Target stores nationwide.
Some people have had mixed reviews about the name of the product. One person took to Reddit and said, “Why do I hate the name so much?” Another person asked, “Like why are they calling them ghetto?” Someone else wrote, “Gastro as in the s—s.”
“We’re a flavor company. We layer flavor the same way hip hop layers samples and interpolations: as a way to expand, comment, shake up, share, and revel in our collective memory,” they stated.
Regarding the name of the brand, they said, “To us, ‘Ghetto’ means innovation. It’s in our name as a reminder of why we do what we do and who we do it to honor the under-represented, under-estimated, and too often ignored.”
Despite the mixed reviews on the brand name, several people shared how good the product is. “They’re so good and I’m making sure y’all stay in the store!!” one person shared on Instagram. Another person shared, “The strawberry ones, were so good, they didn’t even make it to the toaster!”
Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery reported that in 2023 Ghetto Gastro’s chef-crafted breakfast offerings were only available in select Target stores. Now, they’re gearing up for retail expansion and new products. On July 30, the company will launch two new fall-inspired taster pastry flavors which include Sweet Potato and Brown Sugar.
The products will be available at Target and on Target.com and will be launching on Amazon in August.
Their line of toaster pastries is available in many flavors including strawberry, raspberry, apple cinnamon, and peanut butter & jelly. Their line of pancake and waffle mixes are available in an original flavor as well as strawberry and sweet potato. In addition, they also have various flavors of syrups available in maple cider and spicy maple.
What makes these products unique is that they are vegan, made with organic roots and grains, non-GMO, and include no artificial additives and preservatives. They start at $5.99, with all of their products under $10.
