George Floyd’s Family Will Receive $27 Million Settlement From Minneapolis
Minneapolis has announced they will pay a $27 million settlement to George Floyd’s family in the civil lawsuit filed against them for George Floyd’s death. Complex states that the settlement includes $500,000 for the neighborhood in which Floyd’s fatal arrest took place.
George Floyd’s attorney Ben Crump made a statement about the settlement. He said, “George Floyd’s horrific death, witnessed by millions of people around the world, unleashed a deep longing and undeniable demand for justice and change.” He adds that the settlement “sends a powerful message that Black lives do matter and police brutality against people of color must end.”
Minneapolis mayor Jacob Fray also released a statement on Twitter. Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin’s trial is set to begin on March 29. If convicted, he can face 25 to 40 years in prison.
