Yesterday (May 24) an 18-year-old gunman identified as Uvalde resident Salvador Ramos opened fire in a Texas elementary school killing at least 19 children and two teachers, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety, per NBC. Authorities said the shooter was killed on the scene by law enforcement officials.
The horrific event occurred at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas around 11:30 am Tuesday. Prior to the school shooting, the suspect also shot his grandmother but she survived the attack.
“He shot and killed, horrifically and incomprehensibly, 14 students and killed a teacher,” the governor said before additional deaths were confirmed.
They later confirmed that 19 children and two teachers were killed in addition to the suspected shooter.
President Biden condemned the shooting in an address Tuesday night.
“I had hoped when I became president I would not have to do this — again,” the president said, per CBS News. “Another massacre. Uvalde, Texas. An elementary school. Beautiful, innocent second, third and fourth graders. And how many scores of little children who witnessed what happened — see their friends die, as if they’re in a battlefield, for God’s sake. They’ll live with it the rest of their lives.”
