Cheap Games To Get You Through Summer Quarantine
Written by Kevin Kelly – CheckpointXP On Campus
Summer is nearly upon us! And since we know everyone is going to be trapped inside for a large chunk of the summer, we have all come together to give you our best recommendations of cheap games to play during your quarantine, of course with price in mind. Many of these games are coming from The Epic Games Store “Epic MEGA Sale”, so make sure to snatch up those deals before the sale ends on June 11th!
Control – Epic Games Store ($29.99)
- Control is a supernatural third-person action-adventure game which was one of the breakout hits from 2019. An incredibly stylistic game that will appeal to fans of series like The X Files and Twin Peaks, Control is one of the best games available on the Epic Mega Sale, and being able to pick it up for 30 bucks is a steal.
Hades – Epic Games Store ($19.99)
- This recommendation is for those looking to broaden their horizons outside of the AAA landscape with Hades, an action-adventure RPG that will provide you with something to well and truly pass the time during your quarantine. Hades is a densely packed game that will keep you busy for hours. The game is still in early access, so you can expect plenty more content to come your way after the fact, and you can pick up Hades on the Epic Games Store, as part of the Epic Mega Sale for $19.99 through June 11th.
Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Game of the Year Edition – Epic Games Store ($14.98)
- One of the classics. If you’re looking to scratch a CD Projekt Red sized itch in the wake of Cyberpunk 2077 being delayed, the game of the year edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is perfect for the price. Including all past DLC for the game, you won’t find a better deal for such a classic game. And coming in under $15, it’s hard to argue against how much value you’re getting here. You can find The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Game of the Year edition as another part of the Epic Mega Sale on the Epic Games Store.
Apex Legends – EA Origins/PS4/Xbox One (FREE.99)
- This suggestion easily provides the best bang for your buck, because it lets you keep that buck entirely! Apex Legends, the breakout free-to-play battle royale shooter of 2019 is perfect for those who want to strike a balance between the cartoon art style of Fortnite, and the (at times) overbearing intensity of Call of Duty: Warzone. You can pick up Apex absolutely free at the online games shop of your choice, as long as those choices are EA Origin, Playstation Store, or the Xbox One Store.
Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – Nintendo E-Shop ($40)
- In the lone Nintendo E-Shop recommendation on the list, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (Tokyo 2020), the latest in the series that crosses over two of video games’ most iconic characters. If you’ve somehow been able to snag a Nintendo Switch in the midst of all the craziness, then this is a game you’ll definitely want to pick up on the E-Shop.
South Park: Stick of Truth – Epic Games Store ($7.49)
- The cheapest “non-free” option of the list with South Park: Stick Of Truth, the RPG game featuring all of your faves from the show, which also does a fantastic job capturing the show’s essence, as well as offering a surprising number of customization options. You can find South Park: Stick of Truth as part of the Epic Mega Sale on the Epic Games Store for just $7.49
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey – Epic Games Store ($19.79)
- An absolute steal from what I believe to be one of the most underrated games from last year, and definitely one of the most underrated in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. While polarizing, Odyssey is a beautiful game whose RPG mechanics are a welcome addition to what I believed to be a long tired format. Picking up a game this good for under 20 bucks seems like a no brainer to me.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order – Epic Games Store ($38.99)
- A welcome addition to EA’s reclamation project with the Star Wars license, Jedi: Fallen Order surprised a lot of people with a robust “Dark Souls”-esque combat system and an engaging story that deepens the overall Star Wars universe. This, in addition to the complete 180 that DICE”s Battlefront 2 has been able to pull off makes it two wins in a row for Star Wars in the EA era. If you’re a Star Wars fan and haven’t played this game yet, now is the perfect time to get in on it for under $40.
Watch Dogs 2 – Epic Games Store ($17.99)
- A sequel to the original that takes itself much less seriously, and really leans into the advantages of its premise. With a vast technological arsenal allowing you to approach in-game situations a large variety of ways, and a much more apt setting of modern-day Silicon Valley, Watch Dogs 2 is a welcome improvement over the disappointment of its predecessor and is a compelling buy at less than $20.
