Da Brat Talks About Being Openly Gay In Hip-Hop
Da Brat says that DaBaby is not speaking for all of hip-hop when he shouted homophobic remarks during his Rolling Loud performance and says its actually getting easier to be openly gay in hip-hop.
Da Brat and her fiancée Judy Dupart spoke to TMZ Live on being openly gay in hip-hop. “There’s a different vibe these days when someone comes out as gay versus back when [I] was coming up in the industry,” the rapper said. “[Back then,] Artists could lose everything just for coming out.”
Da Brat mentioned Ellen DeGeneres famously coming out on the 1997 episode of her ABC sitcom. The rapper says “that undoubtedly made artists feel like they needed to continue hiding their sexual orientation — or face the consequences.”
“But now it’s 2021 so it’s a different vibe, totally, and people are 100 percent supportive,” Dat Brat added.
Da Brat came out publicly last year in an Instagram post making her and Dupart’s relationship “Instagram official.” The pair got together in 2019 but kept their relationship under wraps.
“I didn’t necessarily think that in the hip-hop industry at this point in 2019 that it was something that had to be hidden,” Dupart per Pink News.
Dupart added: “The reason why she was able to live her life was because it’s almost like, I’m not going to say way more accepting, but it’s more relaxed than what it was.”
