Jay-Z’s Made in America festival has been canceled. Lizzo and SZA were the scheduled co-headliners. The event was scheduled for September 2 and 3 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Less than a month before the festival, the festival’s official social account posted on Monday (August 8): “Made in America festival will no longer be taking place.”
“This decision has been difficult and has not been made lightly nor without immense deliberation.” They announced the festival would return next year and that all ticketholders would be issued refunds. Miguel, Tems, Metro Boomin, Ice Spice, Coi Leray, Latto, Lil Yachty, Doechii, and many more were scheduled to perform. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney shared his I’m disappointed to hear that the 2023 @MIAFestival will not be taking place. We’re grateful to the partners and festival goers who have contributed to this event’s incredible success over the years, and we look forward to bringing MIA back to the Parkway next year. https://t.co/J2EReRjnK2

News of the cancellation comes one week after the 35-year-old singer was sued by three of her former dancers for sexual harassment and discrimination. In a 44-page lawsuit, the dancers detailed allege that Lizzo pressured them into attending a live sex show in Amsterdam. Among some of the details: “Lizzo began inviting cast members to take turns touching the nude performers, catching dildos launched from the performers’ vaginas, and eating bananas protruding from the performers’ vaginas.”
There was also alleged racial discrimination against Black members of the dance team. They alleged they were being “treated differently.” They allegedly were accused of “being lazy, unprofessional, and having bad attitudes.” In response, Lizzo wrote on Instagram: “These last few days have been gut wrenchingly difficult and overwhelmingly disappointing. My work ethic, morals and respectfulness have been questioned. Usually, I choose not to respond to false allegations but these are as unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous to not be addressed.”
