Beyoncé Becomes First Black Woman To Earn No. 1 Country Album
Beyoncé has made history as the first Black woman to have a No. 1 Country album. Cowboy Carter earned the top spot on the Country Chart, Americana/Folk Chart, and the Billboard 200, which encompasses all genres. This makes Beyoncé’s eighth time debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with each one of her solo albums.
Beyoncé announced the album during her Verizon commercial for the Super Bowl. In the ad, she’s at a lemonade stand, which references her 2016 Grammy-winning album, Lemonade. A “Bar-bey” moment showed the singer dressed in all pink, referencing the Oscar-nominated film Barbie, and a mention of “BOTUS” was a take on “POTUS,” or “President of the United States.” She ends the commericial by saying, “OK, they ready — drop the new music. I told y’all the ‘Renaissance’ is not over.”
She released two singles: “16 Carriages” and “Texas Hold ‘Em” with the latter earning her a No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart — the first Black woman to have a song top the chart.
When she shared the official cover art for the album, she told fans the inspiration behind the project.
“[The album] was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t,” seemingly referring to the backlash she received performing with the Dixie Chicks at the Country Music Awards, which happened in 2016.
“But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive. It feels good to see how music can unite so many people around the world, while also amplifying the voices of some of the people who have dedicated so much of their lives educating on our musical history,” she continued.
“The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me. act ii is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work,” she added.
Beyoncé Releases Cowboy Carter
Cowboy Carter was released the following month on March 29. The album has guest appearances from Dolly Parton, Miley Cyrus, Post Malone, Willie Nelson, Shaboozey, Linda Martell, Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Willie Jones, Tiera Kennedy, and Reyna Roberts. Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s youngest daughter, Rumi Carter, is also credited with the album.
“This album took over five years,” Beyoncé said in a press release. “It’s been really great to have the time and the grace to be able to take my time with it. I was initially going to put Cowboy Carter out first, but with the pandemic, there was too much heaviness in the world. We wanted to dance. We deserved to dance. But I had to trust God’s timing.”
