Chris Rock Might Address Will Smith’s Oscars Slap in Netflix Special

During this weekend’s live comedy special, Chris Rock is expected to finally address the moment Will Smith slapped him at the Oscars last year. The comedian’s special, Selective Outrage, will stream on Netflix at 10 p.m. ET on Saturday (March 4).

A source told Page Six, “If you were waiting to see Rock on tour address the infamous Will Smith slap situation . . . the comedian is waiting to spill his humorous take on it on his live Netflix stand-up special.”

The source said that the tough part for Rock, 58, has been how to test out the material while keeping it under wraps. “Most stand-ups like to test out their material in smaller clubs before they tape a special,” the source says, but Rock “relied on the help of veteran comedy writers to run his jokes by to make sure they were tweaked, solid and funny.”

Another insider added that the material wouldn’t dominate Rock’s show, but, “People need to tune in till the last joke, they will not be disappointed.”

Yesterday (March 2), Decider reported that Rock recently checked out Smith’s latest film to watch him get punished. “The other day, I watched Emancipation just so I could watch him getting whipped,” the comedian told a crow at a show at the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore last month. “The thing people wanna know … did it hurt? Hell yeah, it hurt. He played Muhammad Ali! I played Pookie,” Rock continued, referring to his 1991 movie New Jack City. “Even in animated movies I’m a zebra, he’s a f—ing shark.”

As we previously reported, the Selective Outrage will mark Rock’s return to live comedy after a five-year break. Rock will perform in Baltimore, at Maryland’s iconic Hippodrome Theatre, with the pre-show, The Show Before the Show, to be hosted by comedian and actor Ronny Chieng with appearances from Arsenio Hall, Leslie Jones, Deon Cole and more.

Right after the show, David Spade and Dana Carvey will tap in as co-hosts for The Show After the Show. Taking place live from Los Angeles’ The Comedy Store, guests will include comedian JB Smoove and six-time NBA champion and MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Both The Show After the Show and The Show Before the Show will only be available live on March 4.

As Chris Rock was presenting the nominees for Best Documentary, he began his intro by taking a few digs at the stars in the audience — one of them being Jada Pinkett Smith and her alopecia condition. Rock said to Jada, “Can’t wait to see you in the next G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it,” and husband Will Smith laughed and clapped along with the joke. Jada, however, was not amused. So much so, that Will walked his way up on stage and slapped Chris Rock across the face. It was then that we all thought our televisions froze, but it was just Will cussing out the presenter. “Keep my wife’s name out of your f—ing mouth!” Rock kept his cool and joked, “That was, uh, the greatest night in the history of television…”
